Reactionary Content + Terminally Offline = Totally Confused About What's Happening - A Bit Drafty
The complaints are in, and they don't make sense to me.
A Bit Drafty is a series of articles about various topics that get one draft and are published without any edits or revisions. Some of the thoughts and ideas presented are incomplete, but who cares, that’s the point of A Bit Drafty.
I’m not really on social media anymore. Way back before the pandemic, I curbed my social media usage and isolated most of it to twitter. Eventually though, I found myself spending less and less time on there too. when you go from what some call “terminally online” to never really online, you miss out on so much. Well, I should say it feels like you miss out on so much.
What I’ve started to observe is that the reactionary content that I would occasionally popcorn watch is even more confusing than before. Most of the time I’d watch and laugh - There’s a lot of humor in watching someone flail their arms around like Charlie from Always Sunny and connecting the dots in the most bizzare pepe silvia adaptation you’ve ever seen.
But now that I’m not scrolling through twitter or binging gaming videos on repeat? Its like dropping into season 4 of Game of Thrones. Who is who and what the fuck is happening? All of this confusion leads me to one conclusion - Does anyone care?
I like John Oliver. I think his show does a great job of highlighting some random topic, saying how the current version or implementation of it is wack as fuck, connecting the dots on how it might affect you or someone you know, and then walking you through some potential steps to change the system. It’s a great formula for making someone suddenly care about something. So why isn’t there a john oliver reactionary youtuber?
Most of the things I hear about when watching the occasional weirdo complain about video game companies or journalists are just really kiddie pool deep takes that everyone has said a billion times before. When goober gobber 2.0 came around, I was totally lost about the whole thing and had to have someone explain it to me like I was 5. And all the reactionaries I poisoned myself by glancing at didn’t even really explain the issue and its actual impacts.
One clip I saw had a guy who said that video games are for men, and that women like to do nursing and pr. That was the whole commentary. Like none of that makes any sense! None of that supports the main thesis that companies are too woke now! I just don’t get it. If you guys want me to care about it, maybe put some more effort into it (so much irony in that line that I’m no longer anemic).
Semi related piece to reactionaries is the idea that people want forced diversity. They don’t.
